FINALLY!
UPDATE: April 12 2022
Legal recreational weed sales could begin in a matter of weeks in New Jersey. But that will only happen in a limited number of medical marijuana dispensaries that have applied for and been approved to add recreational sales for adults over 21. The approvals are for 7 companies totaling 13 dispensaries. Recreational sales can start as soon as the licensees pay the appropriate fees to the state. That will make New Jersey the second state on the east coast (Massachusetts was the first) to allow the sale of recreational marijuana to adults.
Meanwhile, many municipalities have passed local laws prohibiting the opening of marijuana dispensaries. This seems bizarre to many of us who favor legalization since all of those towns allow the sale of alcohol beverages. Many of the local politicians must see marijuana consumers as drug-rattled degenerates as depicted in the movie reefer Madness. It’s hard to understand this point of view as alcohol is clearly more dangerous, more destructive to the body and much more addictive than marijuana. Fact is, marijuana is not physically addictive whereas alcohol is very additive. Maybe those politicians are just pandering to those voters who see marijuana consumers as drug-crazed hippies from the 1960’s. Old myths die hard.
Anyway, legal weed is coming to a town (sort of) near you in the not-too-distant future. For now, it looks like the first legal weed dispensaries will be mostly in South Jersey and in the northern part of the state…( maybe one in Neptune, not too far from the Asbury Park Boardwalk…we’ll see)
SIDE NOTE: It’s disappointing that Breakwater is sticking to medical sales only for now. They are an excellent dispensary, but the ‘medical marijuana doctor’ situation is a giant ripoff in New Jersey…so Breakwater customers are stuck with that scenario for the time being…but I’ll leave the medical marijuana doctor ripoff situation to be discussed in another post.
