In 2011, Ellen Greenberg, a 27 year old school teacher was found dead in her Philadelphia apartment, which she shared with her fiancé, Sam Goldberg.
She was stabbed 20 times, with about half of the stab wounds in the back of her head and neck.
Initially the death was characterized as a murder by the Medical Examiner, but shortly after, that characterization was changed to suicide. The Philadelphia Police Department disagreed with the initial murder assessment and then the Medical Examiner changed their conclusion to suicide. There was also 11 bruises on her body in various stages of healing.
The victim’s fiancé, Sam Goldberg, claims to have discovered to body after returning from the gym. Goldberg phoned his cousin, attorney Kamian Schwartzman, son of prominent politically-connected Philadelphia attorney James Schwartzman around the same time he called 911. Sam Goldberg’s Uncle James Schwartzman and cousin Kamian Schwartzman and arrived at the apartment on the night of the death.
Ellen Greenberg’s parents have been trying for years to get the Medical Examiner to change to cause of death to either ‘murder’ or ‘suspicious’ in an attempt to find out what really happened to their daughter.
In 2019, at the request of Chief Medical Examiner Sam Gulino, a former Philadelphia County Assistant Medical Examiner…Dr Lindsey Emery… reviewed a city-retained piece of Ellen Greenberg’s spinal column and determined that at least 2 of the stab wounds were made after the victim was dead.
The victim’s parents, through their attorney’s, contacted the office of Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro with this new evidence. Shapiro’s office contacted the Greenberg’s by letter indicating they reviewed the case and said the evidence still supported a suicide.
