Project MK Ultra was a secret CIA mind control program in which LSD, other drugs, sleep depravation, hypnosis as well as other methods were used on people, often illegally, without their knowledge or consent in an effort by the CIA to study brainwashing techniques for a number of purposes including creating assassins. The program was run by by Dr. Sidney Gottlieb during the 1950’s and 1960’s. Gottlieb originally reported to CIA Director Allen Dulles and later to CIA Director Richard Helms.
One of the best books about MK Ultra was ‘The Search for the Manchurian Candidate’ by John Marks in 1991. A more recent book on the MK Ultra and its’ head Sydney Gottlieb is the book ‘Poisoner in Chief; Sydney Gottlieb and the CIA Search for Mind Control’ published in 2019. To those who may be unfamiliar with MK Ultra thinking it sounds like some wacky paranoid fantasy it is worth noting that in the 1970’s The New York Times ran 27 stories on Project MKUltra with 8 of them on the front page, according to Tom O’Neill in his book ‘Chaos.’
Much has been written about the ultra-secretive CIA program and there have been Congressional investigations into MK Ultra.

In this excellent 2019 book ‘Chaos: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties’, author Tom O’Neill is able, for the very first time, to document a connection between Jack Ruby, the mob-connected Dallas strip club owner who murdered accused JFK assassin Lee Harvey Oswald with a top MK Ultra doctor who worked directly under Dr Sydney Gottlieb, the head of the MK Ultra program for the CIA.
Author O’Neill discovered the smoking gun document while researching his book ‘Chaos.’ O’Neill discovered the evidence in the form of written correspondence in the papers of Dr. Louis Jolyon West, known to his friends as ‘Jolly’, at UCLA. Dr. West donated his papers to UCLA and apparently author O’Neill is the first person to take the time to go through them.
The takeaways are as follows: Dr. West (Jolly) worked under Dr. Sydney Gottlieb since the beginning of the CIA’s MKUltra project since the beginning in 1953. Jolly West gained notoriety in the 1950’s when he helped deprogram American POW’s returning from the Korean War, POW’s who our government believed to be brainwashed. In the 1970’s when the scandalous MK Ultra program become known a number of journalists connected Dr. Jolly West to the program. As part of MK Ultra… various brainwashing experiments were performed on Americans, often without their consent of knowledge, using LSD, sleep depravation, other drugs such as amphetamines, hypnosis and more.
Author O’Neill discovered correspondence between Dr. Sidney Gottlieb and Dr. Jolly West regarding their experiments going back as far as 1953.
There are many angles of relevance to this discovery by O’Neill. One of particular interest is that when Jack Ruby was in jail after the Oswald murder and was waiting to testify before the Warren Commission, Ruby was ‘examined’ in jail by Dr. Jolly West. Within 48 hours of the Dr. West visit with Ruby, Jack Ruby experience some sort of mental breakdown and became incoherent and unable to testify before the Warren Commission. The Warren Commission was the panel established by President Lyndon Johnson to investigate the assassination of JFK. So, hours after a CIA MK Ultra doctor ‘examined’ the man who murdered Lee Harvey Oswald, Ruby lost his mind and became unable to testify.
